DEPUTY SHERIFF CARLOS AARON RAMIREZ

Deputy Sheriff Carlos Ramirez was struck and killed by a vehicle while he and another deputy were conducting a traffic stop on I-10 near mile marker 533 at 7:30 am.

Another vehicle struck Deputy Ramirez and the other deputy before striking the vehicle that had been stopped. Deputy Ramirez succumbed to his injuries while the other deputy was seriously injured.

Deputy Ramirez was a U.S. Army Reserve veteran and had served with the Kendall County Sheriff's Office for three years. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

OFFICER RUSSELL DEAN SALAZAR

Community Supervision Officer Rusty Salazar was killed in a single-vehicle crash at the interchange of I-10 and U.S. 87 in Kendall County.

He was returning to his office after conducting a field visit with a high-risk sex offender. He was attempting to enter the interstate during a period of rain and low visibility. His vehicle left the roadway and overturned four times. He suffered fatal injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle.

Officer Salazar had served with the Kendall County Community Supervision and Corrections Department for over 11 years. He is survived by his wife and five children.

TROOPER KURT DAVID KNAPP

Trooper Knapp was killed when he lost control of his patrol car and struck another vehicle. He was driving eastbound on IH-10, near Comfort, one early Saturday morning. When he entered the median, he lost control and skidded into the westbound lanes. A car traveling westbound hit the passenger side of his patrol car, killing him.

Trooper Knapp served the Texas Department of Public Safety for 5 years. He was survived by his wife, two children and parents.

DEPUTY SHERIFF LARRY SHERWOOD KOLB

Deputy Sheriff Larry Kolb was shot and killed when he was ambushed after responding to a shots fired call in the Shady Rest Mobile Home Park near Boerne.

Although he was en route home following his shift, he responded to the call while he was off duty because he was the closest deputy to the scene. As he was approaching the residence he identified himself as a deputy and was then shot in the neck and chest by the suspect, who was using an AK-47. Deputy Kolb was not wearing a bullet proof vest.

Other officers who then arrived on the scene found the suspect hiding under a trailer. The suspect fired at them as well but was killed when the officers returned fire.

Deputy Kolb had served with the Kendall County Sheriff's Office for three years. He had previously served in law enforcement since 1987 and had previously served with the Lago Vista Police Department and Austin Independent School District Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two young sons.

SHERIFF DOUGLAS WILLIAM KUEBEL

Sheriff Douglas Kuebel was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance at a home six miles north of Boerne where a man was threatening to kill his wife and family.

He was attempting to talk the man into putting down his shotgun when the man suddenly opened fire. Sheriff Kuebel was struck by the shotgun blast and died en route to the hospital. The suspect was captured shortly after and convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Sheriff Kuebel had served as sheriff for 17 years and was survived by his wife and children.

SHERIFF SIDNEY FRANCIS EDGE

On Saturday, August 7, 1948 Sheriff Edge suffered a fatal heart attack after being involved in a violent struggle with an intoxicated subject. The Sheriff and a deputy were attempting to arrest the man for being drunk. The two eventually were able to subdue the man and take him to jail. A short time later, Sheriff Edge fell ill and collapsed.

Sheriff Edge had served the citizens of Kendall County for 20 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

EARL ECKERT

Volunteer Firefighter Earl Eckert died in the line-of-duty.

Earl suffered a fatal heart attack while transporting a victim of a traffic accident in which three people died.
